York County First Steps Announces Expansion of Countdown to Kindergarten Program for Summer 2013

York County, SC – June 10, 2013 – York County First Steps announces that they have received a grant from the Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation to expand the services for their Countdown to Kindergarten Program to more children this summer. Countdown to Kindergarten is a home visitation program for at-risk children and their families to help the children prepare for a smooth, successful entry into kindergarten in August.

York County First Steps has successfully offered the Countdown to Kindergarten Program for several years to between 60 and 80 children in the four school districts in York County, depending upon funding availability. Through the grant from the Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation, York County First Steps will be able to nearly double to serve 130 children in York County. Kindergarten teachers conduct five home visits that are designed to help the child and his or her parents to master the needed early learning skills and the parental support needed to be successful in school. There is an additional visit to the child’s school to meet the administration and tour the school he or she will attend in August.

York County First Steps works in collaboration with the York, Clover, Rock Hill, and Fort Mill School Districts to provide this program to children that have been identified as possessing educational risk factors. First Steps is hopeful that it can expand the program as additional funding sources are identified.
